viewpoint on the Mount Kolovrat

The project of the viewpoint has been arranged and financed by Studio QRZ in collaboration with the association Modo in the context of the European project Reshape 2012.

The wooden viewpoint on the Mount Kolovrat is a temporary architecture that invites visitors to contemplate on the specifics of this area of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The location of Mount Kolovrat gives the opportunity to extend the view, with good weather, until the Italian Golf of Trieste in the South, and to the Slovenian Monte Nero in the North. The position on the Slovenian-Italian border implies a reflection on the relations between the two peoples. The place represents an intimate space, a visual telescope through which one can enjoy the panorama’s beauty.

The architecture integrates itself into nature and its seasons, and the wooden material reacts towards the various climatic conditions. The interior construction was made out of wood, with a bearing structure of beams with variable sections of 10×10 cm and 5×20 cm in fir and a shell of large lamellas of 5cm in beech. From the first cut, the lamellas have been taken from scrap material. The bark surface faces the outside, and gives the inside of the viewpoint a natural character. The lamellas have been positioned vertically with a spacing of 4cm between each one, in order to filter the sunbeams on the inside and to create a particular light effect. The chosen material expresses the economic efficiency and the simplicity that provides the basis for the project.
